The State Theatre of Opera and ballet of Komi Republic was opened on August 26, 1958. In this day took place the premiere of the opera P. I. Tchaikovsky's " Eugene Onegin ". For the years of existence in the theatre's repertoire included the best samples of world classics of Opera, ballet and operetta, the works of Soviet, Russian and foreign composers.

At first, the creative troupe was 104 persons only. Great importance in the creation of the Theatre had repressed artists. First of all it is Boris Deineka that from 1943 to 1951 was the organizer and the soloists of the Vorkuta prison camp theatre. Also in this time he taught several singers. After his discharge, he headed the Musical Theatre and became the Artistic Director.

Valentina Ishchenko was another soloist of the Vorkuta prison camp theatre. She sang Tatiana in the premiere performance of " Eugene Onegin ". For 25 years V. Ishchenko was the leading soloist of the Musical Theatre. She has performed in all the genres.

The history of the theatre on the stage were put such operas as «Rusálka» (A. Dargomyzhsky), « The Tsar's Bride» and «Mozart and Salieri» (N. Rimsky-Korsakov), « Faust» (C. Gounod), «Tosca», « Cio-Cio San» and « La bohème» (G. Puccini), «La traviata», «Rigoletto» and « Otello» (G. Verdi), «Carmen» (G. Bizet), «Iolanta» and «The Queen of Spades» (P. I. Tchaikovsky), «Pagliacci» (R. Leoncavallo), «La favorite» and « Don Pasquale» (G. Donizetti), «Il barbiere di Siviglia» (G. Rossini), «Le nozze di Figaro» (W. A. Mozart), « Aleko» (S. Rachmaninoff), «Le domino noir» (D. Auber) and etc.

Also were put operettas: «Die Csárdásfürstin», «Mariza», «Der Zigeunerprimas», «Die Zirkusprinzessin» and «Die Bajadere» (E. Kálmán), «Die lustige Witwe» (F. Lehár), «Der Zigeunerbaron» and «Die Fledermaus» (J. Strauss) and etc.

At different times with the collective of the theatre worked fruitfully conductors: V. Kaplun-Vladimirsky, Y. Proskurov, Н. Klaus, V. Malakhov, A. Shteinluht; Directors: I. Orlovsky, K. Vasiliev, E. Popov, I. Bobrakova and others, have put a number of performances. They all put a whole series of performances.

Komi ballet, having origins in the ancient people of ritual dances, drawn up In the middle of the 20 century. In 1961, on grounds of Komi folklore was delivered by the first national ballet «Jag-Mort» («Forest Man» by J. Perepelitsa). On the basis of the Komi musical folklore, national rituals and dances, the authors have created a spectacle, full of bright ethnographic material; the national colour of stressed the choreographic scenes games reindeer herders, fishermen and hunters. This is bright and fascinating fairy tale. Within 50 years «Jag-Mort» is on the stage The State Theatre of Opera and ballet of Komi Republic in the editorial offices of different choreographers with the same success.

In the repertoire of the Theatre for many years successfully staged classical ballets such as «Giselle» and «Le corsaire» (A. Adam), «Swan Lake», «The Nutcracker» and «The Sleeping Beauty» (P. I. Tchaikovsky), «The Fountain of Bakhchisarai» (B. Asafiev), «Don Quixote» and «Paquita» (L. Minkus), «Young Lady and The Hooligan» (D. Shostakovich), «Macbeth» (K. Molchanov), «The Little Humpbacked Horse» (R. Shchedrin), «Coppélia» (L. Delibes), «Adventures of Cipollino» (K. Khachaturian) and etc. Also in the Theater was implemented staged in the evening of modern choreography "Dances PRO..." (V. Romanovsky) to the music of different genres and different historical periods. Ballet troupe of the Theatre became a member of the "Marathon regions of Russia 2012" in the activities of the Cultural Olympiad of Sochi 2014, which presented the project.

At different times with the collective of the theatre worked fruitfully choreographers: D. Vakhovskiy, L. Bordzilovskaya and L. Flegmatov, B. Myagkov, I. Parchagin, L. Sizova and etc.

Every year (since 1991) in the Theater take place the International festival of Opera and Ballet «Syktyvkarsa Tulys» («Syktyvkar spring»). The festival is traditionally opens every spring with the premiere performance, gathering in the walls of the Theatre masters of the scene, soloists and conductors of the leading theatres of Russia and abroad. The obligatory condition of the festival is the final Gala-concert, presenting the viewer the latest and the best numbers of the festival.

The State Theatre of Opera and ballet of Komi Republic toured extensively in Russia and abroad. It was applauded at the XV & XVI “Arte Sacro” ( Madrid, Spain) presenting «The Penance» (combined “Stabat Mater” by Pergolesi and Russian composers’ music in collaboration with Maestro Boris Pokrovskiy). In 2005- 2010 the Theatre has toured in Finland and Switzerland few successful times, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria and Turkey.
